The short version
Instagram is the centre of influencer marketing in India. Reels bring reach, Stories drive action, carousels earn saves, and collab posts put one post on both the creator’s and the brand’s profile. The Paid partnership label discloses the deal and gives the brand access to the post’s insights; partnership ads let you put paid reach behind a creator’s post, from the creator’s own handle. Cast by reading recent Reels and comments, brief for the format and the creator’s voice, clear the music, and measure saves, shares and actions, not likes.
For most brands in India, influencer marketing means Instagram. Short vertical video took over the moment TikTok was banned in 2020, and Instagram has kept adding tools for brands and creators to work together ever since.
Here’s how it works in practice: the formats worth paying for, what the Paid partnership label and partnership ads actually do, and how to cast, brief and measure creators on the platform.
Why does Instagram matter so much for influencer marketing in India?
Because that’s where a huge share of Indian creators and their audiences spend their time, across almost every subject, language and city. It’s also built for discovery: a good Reel can reach far beyond a creator’s followers. That makes it the default first platform for consumer brands, with YouTube alongside it when the product needs explaining in depth.
Which Instagram formats work best for brands?
- Reels for reach. The format most likely to travel beyond a creator’s followers, and the one most partnership ads are built from.
- Stories for action. Link stickers, polls and quick demos, seen mostly by a creator’s most loyal followers. Gone in a day unless saved to highlights.
- Carousels for detail. Comparisons, how-tos and lists that people save to come back to.
- Collab posts for shared reach. One post that appears on both the creator’s and the brand’s profiles, with the views, likes and comments combined.
- Lives for launches and Q&As, where people can ask questions in real time. Since September 2026, brands can also run live broadcasts as partnership ads on Instagram.
What is the Paid partnership label?
Instagram’s built-in disclosure. The creator adds the brand as a partner, and the post shows “Paid partnership with” the brand’s name. Two useful things follow: viewers know it’s a deal, and the tagged brand gets access to the post’s insights, so you don’t have to rely on screenshots alone.
In India, ASCI treats the platform label as an addition to the creator’s own disclosure, not a replacement. The post should still carry a clear label such as “Ad” or “Collaboration” up front. Our ASCI guidelines checklist covers where it goes in every format.
What are Instagram partnership ads?
Partnership ads let a brand put paid reach behind a creator’s content, running from the creator’s handle with both names shown. You can boost a post the creator has already published or build a new ad with their content, and the creator grants permission in the app, so nobody shares passwords. They tend to feel more native than ads from a brand account, because people see the creator first.
Two things to settle before anything runs: how long you can run ads with the creator’s content, and where. That belongs in the contract. We explain the details in usage rights and partnership ads.
How do you find the right creators on Instagram?
- Start with your own audience. Who do your customers follow? Who already tags you?
- Use Meta’s own tools. Instagram’s creator marketplace opened in India in February 2024, and in September 2026 Meta folded it and its partnership-ads tools into a single Creator Marketing Hub. Treat its recommendations as a shortlist, not a decision.
- Read recent Reels, not the all-time hit. How do the last ten perform against the follower count?
- Read the comments. Conversations are a good sign; emoji from strangers aren’t.
- Ask for insights. Audience location, age and language, and Story views, which the public profile doesn’t show.

How do you brief an Instagram creator?
- Brief the format. A Reel, a Story set and a carousel are different jobs. Say which you need and why.
- Protect the first seconds. On Reels, the opening decides whether anyone stays. Let the creator open the way their audience expects, not with your logo.
- Give direction, not dialogue. One thing to remember, the claims that need exact wording, and room for the rest.
- Clear the music. Popular tracks in the app aren’t always cleared for branded content or ads. Use licensed or original audio if the post might become a partnership ad.
- Agree labels, approvals and timings before anyone films.

How do you measure Instagram influencer marketing?
- Reach among the right people: how many accounts saw it, and how many didn’t already follow the creator.
- Saves and shares: the strongest signals that a post was useful or worth passing on.
- Actions: profile visits, link taps, code redemptions and tracked sales.
- Comments: questions about the product are worth more than compliments.
- Partnership-ad results in Ads Manager, compared against your brand-account ads.
What are the most common mistakes?
- Buying a single feed post and expecting it to carry a launch.
- Scripting Reels so tightly they read like ads.
- Forgetting that Stories disappear, then having nothing to show for them.
- Running partnership ads without agreeing usage terms first.
- Judging a campaign on likes.

Questions people ask
- How does influencer marketing work on Instagram?
- A brand works with creators whose audiences it wants to reach. The creator makes content such as Reels, Stories or carousels in their own style, labels it as a paid partnership, and posts it. The brand can then put paid reach behind the best posts as partnership ads.
- What is a paid partnership on Instagram?
- A post where a creator has a material connection with a brand, marked with Instagram’s “Paid partnership” label naming the brand. In India it should also carry a clear label such as “Ad” or “Collaboration” under ASCI’s guidelines. The tagged brand can see the post’s insights.
- What are Instagram partnership ads?
- Ads that run from a creator’s handle, with the creator and the brand both named, using a creator’s existing post or new content. The creator gives permission in the app, and the brand pays for the reach. Usage terms should be agreed in the contract first.
- Which Instagram format is best for influencer marketing?
- It depends on the job. Reels are best for reach, Stories for links and quick action, carousels for detail and saves, collab posts for reaching both audiences at once, and lives for launches and Q&As.
