YouTube influencer marketing: a guide for brands.

Why YouTube builds trust like no other platform, the ways brands work with creators there, and how to brief, disclose and measure it properly.

The short version

YouTube is where people watch creators for twenty minutes at a time and search for advice before they buy, which makes it the strongest platform for trust and considered purchases. Brands work with YouTubers through segments inside videos, dedicated videos, Shorts, series and long-term partnerships, and in India YouTube’s BrandConnect has connected eligible creators with select advertisers since December 2023. Brief the creator on the message, not the script; tick YouTube’s paid promotion box and say it on screen; and measure watch time, clicks and search as well as views.

Searches for YouTube influencer marketing are among the fastest-rising in the category this year, according to Google Trends. That makes sense. No other platform gives a creator twenty uninterrupted minutes with someone who chose to watch.

Here’s why YouTube works so well for brands, the ways to work with creators there, and how to brief, disclose and measure it properly.

Why use YouTube for influencer marketing?

  • Depth. People watch their favourite YouTubers for long stretches, increasingly on the TV in their living room. Trust builds over hundreds of videos.
  • Search. YouTube is where people look for “best”, “review” and “how to” before they buy. A good video keeps getting found for months, sometimes years.
  • Range. Long videos, Shorts, live streams, podcasts and series, often from the same creator.
  • Languages. India has strong YouTube creators in almost every language and subject, and regional channels often have the most loyal audiences of all.

What are the ways brands work with YouTube creators?

  • A segment inside a regular video. The classic sponsorship: a short, personal mention in the middle of a video people came for anyway.
  • A dedicated video. A review, unboxing, tutorial or challenge built around the product. The most attention, and the most trust at stake. Good creators will insist on giving their honest opinion.
  • Shorts. Quick demos and reach, often sending viewers on to longer videos.
  • Series. In September 2026, YouTube began rolling out Shorts series, which lets creators in its Partner Program organise Shorts into seasons and episodes. A brand can sponsor a season rather than a single post.
  • Live streams. Launches, Q&As and demonstrations, with questions answered in real time.
  • Long-term partnerships. A creator who mentions you across a year is far more believable than one who mentions you once.
  • Creator videos as ads. With permission and the right usage terms, a brand can run the best videos as ads.

What is YouTube BrandConnect?

BrandConnect is YouTube’s own branded content platform, connecting creators with brands and agencies for sponsored work. It launched in India in December 2023 for eligible creators and select advertisers, and it gives creators a new way to be discovered by brands. Like any marketplace, it makes introductions. The casting judgement and the brief are still the brand’s, or its agency’s. We compare the options in agency vs platform vs app.

How do you choose the right YouTube creator?

  • Watch three of their videos in full. If you don’t want to finish them, neither will your customers.
  • Look at recent videos, not the all-time hit. How do the last ten perform against their subscriber count?
  • Read the comments. Comments that mention specific moments mean people actually watched.
  • Watch their past sponsorships. Do they still sound like themselves? Do viewers complain?
  • Ask for analytics. Audience location, age and language, and retention on past sponsored segments.

How do you brief a YouTube creator?

  • One thing to remember. The single idea viewers should leave with.
  • Must-says and must-not-says, kept to the minimum: claims that need exact wording, and anything legally off limits.
  • Placement. Let the creator choose where the segment goes. They know when their audience is listening.
  • Room for an honest opinion. Their credibility is what you’re paying for.
  • The practical bits: links, codes, the pinned comment, description copy and timings.
  • Approval for facts, not style. Check the claims are right; leave the voice alone.

How should YouTube sponsorships be disclosed?

YouTube requires creators to tick the paid promotion box in YouTube Studio for sponsorships, product placements and endorsements, which adds an “Includes paid promotion” label to the video. That’s the platform’s rule.

In India it isn’t enough on its own. ASCI’s guidelines and the government’s Endorsement Know-hows also expect the disclosure in the video itself: shown on screen while the brand features, and said out loud. Finance creators giving investment advice must be registered with SEBI, and creators giving technical health advice need relevant qualifications. Our ASCI guidelines checklist covers the rules in full.

How do you measure YouTube influencer marketing?

  • Watch time and retention, especially through the sponsored segment. Ask the creator for screenshots.
  • Clicks and codes through tracked links in the description and pinned comment.
  • Search. More people searching for your brand by name after a video goes out is one of the best signals there is.
  • Comments. Questions about the product mean genuine interest.
  • The long tail. YouTube videos keep earning views long after launch, so measure at thirty days and again at ninety.
